Dear Queenagers

I hope you are all sitting somewhere sunny, but not too hot, on a lounger recharging for the year ahead, cool drink within easy reach and a stack of holiday reading waiting for your delectation. Or maybe, like me, you are in the UK, hammering away at your computer and looking out at the low hanging grey cloud and the drizzle… yesterday I swear it felt autumnal!

Anyway, if you are vaguely in that back-to-school, what does the rest of the year, my life, my career look like mode then this is the newsletter for you because it is all about Queenager-friendly jobs. Given that the banking sector has been on the front pages all of this week and that one of the few female CEOs in the FTSE 100 Alison Rose had to resign this week, it feels good to be offering up some opportunities to get some senior women back into the sector! So this month’s 50 plus-friendly employer  is Bank of Ireland. It is an international company so there are jobs in Derry but also Bristol and other parts of the UK, and they offer flexibility (as our research shows that flexibility is 16 times more important to Queenagers than straight status).

At Noon and on this newsletter we talk a lot about companies shifting to a more longevity-focussed, Queenager lens. Realising that older women are a quarter of the population and the fastest growing part of the work-force and we need to be thought about. Bank of Ireland are leaders in their sector at championing anti-age discrimination, particularly the kind of gendered-ageism that too often affects women at this point. They are ahead of the curve since by 2030 nearly half of over 50s are due to be in work (47% according to the Centre for Economics and Business); and our Noon research shows that women 45-60 are behind over 90 per cent of all household consumer spending decisions, outspend millennials by 250% and over half are the main bread winner in their family.

Clever companies are realising that not only does their workforce need to reflect the ageing population but their consumer offering needs to specifically target the over-50s too. Particularly when you consider that in 2019 women over 40 started out-earning women under 40 for the first time ever… ~Queenagers are a force that needs to be recognised.
