Queenager Exclusive: January Noon Book Club with Shelley Read author of Go As A River
A very special early peek at one of the big books of 2023 - just for you lovely Queenagers

Dear Queenagers
Hope your first week back in the office in the grey gloom of January isn’t too grim! Here is an offering to cheer you up: our first Noon Book Club of 2023. It is on January 18th at 7pm to register here is the link - it’s free for all to join!
The author is a debut novelist, Shelley Read, 58, an amazing Queenager who has written a book called Go As A River which I’ve just finished reading and is going to be one of THE great books of 2023. It is vivid and beautiful, a love story, a coming of age story – but also a book which deals with bigger, darker themes, of the terrible treatment of native Americans and the harshness of women’s lives - particularly when coupled with forbidden love.
We are lucky to be having a world exclusive peek at the book for the Noon Book Club (my first 100 paid subscribers all received a proof just before Christmas - if you are a Paid Subscriber of later origin and sign up to attend the Noon Book Club you can have access to an advance electronic copy if you would like to read it just scroll down to the bottom of this email to the paywall for paying readers and I’ll explain how).
I’ve had some rapturous feedback, Go As A River is published in the spring). I met Shelley last month when she came to London from her native Colorado. She spent thirty years as an academic living in the mountains where the book is set; I grew up on My Friend Flicka and tales of horses and ranching in the American West so this felt like a more grown-up, more nuanced, darker version. But set in that intoxicating landscape.
And I just loved Shelley; she has an incredible Queenager story. She only started writing full time a couple of years ago. Go As A River has been snapped up in 40 territories globally and she is set to be a literary super-star. She is living proof that you are never too old and it is never too late to realise your dreams. Her warmth, wisdom and insight into midlife and becoming are inspirational. I had such a great chat with her over breakfast that I begged her to be our first Noon Book Club author of 2023. So big thanks to our friends at Transworld for sorting this out for us. I can’t wait!
Please remember to sign up to the eventbrite where all the online links for the event are.
Look forward to seeing you on the 18th - for those of you who haven’t been to one of these - it’s not just about the book, it is about Queenager-hood through the lens of the author and the audience experience. I ask all your questions, it’s very friendly and all about midlife!
Best
Eleanor
