Queenager Careers: Looking for a new gig? Check out our September Jobs Board
Our monthly list of employers seeking workers 50 plus to fill their vacancies...
Yup that’s me talking about how we keep more Queenagers in the work force at Barclays last week, kicking off their Career week with Sharon Sharples, Head of their Gender Network WIN UK. Barclays are an age-inclusive employer and are blazing the trail for reinventing careers in midlife with their Evolve network
Dear Queenagers
Welcome to our September Queenager Careers newsletter featuring lots of new vacancies all available on the September Noon Jobs Board . This is particularly timely because of today’s figures from the Office for National Statistics which show that 42% of the UK’s part time workers are aged over 50. That is an increase of 56% in 20 years and fits with the research noon.org.uk conducted which found that flexibility is 16 times more important to Queenagers than ‘status’! This month you will find lots of opportunities from employers actively seeking more ‘experienced’ and ‘mature’ workers – there are specific links to featured jobs on the bottom of this email or check out the link to the Noon Jobs Board above.
We find that experienced workers tend to be juggling other things in their lives – such as caring responsibilities so part-time is a boon. And/Or they want time to pursue their passions and purpose, we tend to be driven partly by the need to earn a crust but also by a sense that if we want to do the thing we always dreamed of then NOW is the time. Work needs to fit around that. I like this new study about older workers from Bain and Co which divides us all into different worker types – and no surprise, more experienced members of the workforce are the most likely to be purpose and passion driven (appearing in the Artisan and Giver categories, though I also see lots of Pioneers!). Have a look at their worker archetypes to find out which most matches you.
Fortunately an increasing number of employers are realising that in a world where talent is in finite supply they need to be attracting over 50s workers. Last week I went to Barclays to give a talk to their Evolve network (for people in midlife) as part of their Careers week; I was interviewed by Sharon Sharples, Chair of their Gender Network, WIN UK (pictured with me at the top) about what Queenagers want from work and how to keep them on track through the pinchpoints of midlife. Barclays are also working with 55-Redefined who power our jobs board and if you are interested in what they are doing to make their company more age-inclusive (and crucially to appeal to older consumers, let’s not forget that Queenagers are behind over 90 percent of all household spending decisions) then why not join this special Age Pioneers webinar with Barclays CFO Mark Havad? It’s chaired by the brilliant Lyndsey Simpson CEO of 55 Redefined and is free to join.
In the meantime, here are some Queenager friendly jobs. We’re kicking off with some very purpose- driven roles which will also get you out into the fresh air with the Canals and River Trust. As well as some more traditional office ones. All offer flexibility, some are part time – and remember all of these companies are actively looking for older workers so you won’t get dismissed by the algorithm before they even consider your CV (which makes a change!).
Coming fresh of a weekend of paddle boarding and wild swimming (a queenager favourite!), I now appreciate all the people make our waterways safe and clean (ish). If you love spending time on the water, too, why not check out some of these jobs at The Canal and River Trust - our featured employer this month. They need an Area Operations Manager in Birmingham, Â and visitor centre managers up and down the UK, or if you fancy volunteering, how about trying your hand at being a lock keeper or helping out on the tow path taskforce?
Roles come with flexible options paid and voluntary and could be a good blast of fresh air and a new start if you’ve been made redundant, or just fancy a change. It’s a good way to build confidence for a career change – and it’s meaningful work with a community of likeminded people and great for mental wellbeing.
I love this video showing lots of Queenagers leading the charge on the waterways and challenging stereotypes. Including a spot of waterside bee keeping!
